Wig Care 101: How to Make Your Wig Last Longer

Whether you’ve invested in a human hair cranial prosthesis or chosen a beautiful synthetic wig, one thing is certain—you want it to last. A well-cared-for wig not only saves money but also keeps you feeling confident and comfortable every time you wear it.

At The Wig Collective, we teach every client the simple steps to protect their wig and extend its life. Here’s your crash course in Wig Care 101.

1. Wash With Care

Over-washing is one of the most common mistakes wig wearers make.

  • Human hair wigs: Wash every 7–10 wears (or when you notice buildup).

  • Synthetic wigs: Wash every 12–15 wears.

Always use wig-safe shampoos and conditioners—regular hair products can damage wig fibers or strip them of protective coatings.

Pro Tip: Wash in cool to lukewarm water, never hot. Heat can loosen knots in lace or damage synthetic fibers. Wash synthetic wigs in cool water.

2. Dry the Right Way

After washing, gently blot (never wring!) your wig with a soft towel. Place it on a wig stand to air dry.

Avoid blow dryers, as they can damage fibers or shorten the life of your wig. Human hair wigs can be styled with heat once fully dry, but only use professional tools and wig-safe products. Heat protectant is always a good idea!

3. Store It Properly

How you store your wig makes a huge difference.

  • Best option: Keep it on a wig stand or mannequin head to maintain its shape if you'll be wearing it daily. Otherwise satin lined boxes, bags, or hanging bags that are specific for wigs and hair extensions.

  • Avoid: Tossing it in a drawer, where tangling or matting can occur.

  • Travel tip: Use a silk bag or wig box to keep it protected on the go.

4. Brush Gently

Always use a wig brush or wide-tooth comb. Start at the ends and work your way up to avoid pulling or stretching the fibers.

Pro Tip: Hold the wig at the base near the cap as you brush to prevent stress on the knots.

5. Protect Against Friction

The nape of the wig often tangles first because of friction from clothing and movement.

  • A silk scarf or collar protector can help reduce tangling.

  • Applying a wig-safe detangling spray or light silicone spray (like dimethicone) can keep fibers smooth.

6. Limit Heat & Sun Exposure

UV rays and heat can shorten your wig’s lifespan. If you’ll be outside often, consider a wide-brimmed hat, scarf, or a “backup wig” for activities.

7. Schedule a Wig Check-Up

Just like haircuts help maintain your natural hair, regular maintenance keeps your wig looking its best. At The Wig Collective, we offer wig tune-ups—refreshing the style, addressing wear, and making adjustments to keep you feeling confident.
